A short history of GOArt databases

The database project was a part of the D (documentation) subproject within the "Changing Processes in North European Organ Art 1600-1970" six-year research project (1995-2000). The goal has been to create a database structure in which it is possible to store both technical and historical information on organs to serve as a source for the understanding of the development of the organ art. The multidisciplinary environment within the research project and GOArt has played a key role in creating the database. Organ builders, organ experts, organists, archive researchers, musicologists and others have made invaluable contributions to this work.

The database consists at this moment of five different parts:
A. Organ part containing technical information on the instruments.
B. Archive part consisting of (1) written documents containing letters, contracts, descriptions etc. and (2) picture documents containing photos, paintings, drawings etc. A document can also belong to a (3) collection.
C. Person part containing information on persons or companies that in one way or the other have had connections to the organ.
D. Clavichord part containing technical information on the instruments.
E. The Library part.
The GOArt database is a web-based solution which will give public access to the database and also provide the possibility of network research cooperation by which researchers can use and add information to the database independent of their geographical location.
Our hope is that the database can be a research tool as well as a documentation platform for future activities in the field of organ art.
